I’ve been exploring the world of film distribution and was intrigued with how independent films are typically distributed. The main goal is for visibility, credibility and conversation, unlike feature films where profit is the usual goal.
The primary distribution would be through film festivals first, specifically those for students, short films, animation/mixed media and mental health/social issues. Befitting of the themes in my short film. This would be to gain industry validation and curated exposure. I did a bit of research and found these would be good film festivals to showcase my film: BFI Future Film Festival, Encounter Film Fest, Reel Minds Film Fest, Sundance Film Fest.
The secondary distribution would be online platforms and would be done after the festivals. Platforms like YouTube have the advantage of having a wide reach, making the film easily shareable and good for audience discussion. It could also be distributed on Vimeo, a more professional platform for starting filmmakers. This platform is better perceived for portfolio and funding opportunities.
Marketing can be done through social media, where 15s-30s snippets of the film are posted to get awareness, engagement and curiosity. Another would be through educational events or partnerships with organisations that focus on mental health/ones that talk about masculinity and emotional wellbeing.
Maybe we don’t let them see his full face before the launch (teasers images)? Or closer to the release as a bit of a surprise.
